Ipomoea batata

Sweet potato

Creeping climber with long-stalked leaves that are very variable in form (circular to finger-shaped) and colour (green to purplish-red). The flowers are white or reddish in small inflorescences. The thickened root of the plant contains latex and can also range in colour from orange to purple. The sweet potato produces capsules with up to five black seeds.

This starchy root tuber has a high nutritional value and is cultivated everywhere in the tropics and subtropics. The over 1,000 varieties differ very markedly from each other, providing a fascinating range of sweet potatoes.

We have planted our attractive purple and green climbing plant not just for green foliage at bare spots in the tropical garden but also as outdoor greenery around the Tropenhaus and to provide a seasonal harvest.
