Pimenta dioica

Pimento/Allspice/Jamaica pepper

Evergreen tree up to 12 metres in height with thin, leathery, smooth-edged leaves. The fruits of the pimento are spherical dark berries that grow in panicles and lose their flavour when fully ripe.

The leaves of the tree surprisingly smell of cloves, pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. The spice made from the unripe fruits of the Jamaica pepper is known by the name of pimento. In the Caribbean, the fresh leaves of the Jamaica pepper are also sold as a spice.

We dry the aromatic leaves of the Jamaica pepper and use them in our herbal salt or chocolate, for example.
