Carica bentagona

Mountain papaya/Babaco

Tree with tuft-like crown. The trunk bears scars from the long-stemmed, palmate fallen leaves. The yellow five-ribbed fruits contain flavoursome orangey-yellow pulp and numerous greenish-black seeds in the central cavity.

The mountain papaya flourishes predominately at elevations of 1,500 to 3,000 metres and is therefore mainly grown where it is too cold for the common papaya.

In Frutigen we use the firm, slightly acidic flesh of the mountain papaya in our popular mountain papaya ice cream.
