Garcinia mangostana

Mangosteen

Densely leafy evergreen tree up to 25 metres high with elliptical, leathery, greenish-yellow leaves. The pink to yellowish flowers are followed by fist-sized, dark to reddish purple berries with woody sepals. The hard, porous skin contains soft reddish-white pulp divided into 5 to 8 segments.

The mangosteen is very tasty and is generally eaten fresh or served in a dessert. In addition, the dark rind produces a black dye that can be used to tan leather.

Our mangosteen is still in a pot. We are hoping it will grow quickly, because the fruits of this tree are really something worth trying.
