Macadamia integrifolia

Macadamia

Evergreen tree up to 20 metres high with rounded crown. Spiny, leathery dark green leaves that grow to 30 cm in length. The tree bears pendulous white flowers in racemes up to 25 cm long, from which the spherical follicle fruit develop. The smooth green skin contains a single cream-coloured seed in a very hard, brown seed coat.

The highly prized macadamia nuts are commercially removed from their hard shell, roasted in plant oil, salted and sold. Due to this labour-intensive processing, they are colloquially known as the queen of nuts.

We at the Tropenhaus are also hoping for success with the most popular and expensive nut of all. However, the trees only bear their first fruit after 7 to 10 years so we are still waiting for a harvest.
