Alpina nutans

Dwarf cardamom

Rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with long green lanceolate leaves arranged alternately on the stem. It produces white flowers, each with a large, yellow and red lip, directly from the rhizome in compact, scaly inflorescences.

Dwarf cardamom should not be confused with the related cardamom, as dwarf cardamom does not produce any aromatic seed capsules. However, the leaves have a strong smell of cinnamon and cardamom and are said to have antibacterial properties.

We dry the dwarf cardamom to produce a strong-tasting tea. The scented leaves are also enjoyed by both the gardening team and our visitors.
