Hylocereus monacanthus

Dragon fruit

Climbing cactus with three-winged cross-section and long adventitious roots. The yellowish-white flowers are up to 30 cm long and are composed of numerous petals. The dragon fruit is a hand-sized, red, scaly fruit with juicy pulp and countless tiny black seeds.

The large flowers that smell strongly of jasmine only open at night and have to be pollinated by hand in the mornings. This requires two flowers to be open at the same time in order to make a cross.

We like to leave the dragon fruit hanging on the cactus as the red fruits are especially prominent there for visitors to view. From time to time we also harvest them for tropical fruit tastings.
