Psidium guajava

Common guava

Small evergreen tree with oblong-elliptic leaves. The guavas are fleshy berries up to 10 cm in size that turn yellow when ripe and have a characteristic smell. The pulp is pink and contains a large number of small hard seeds.

Thanks to the heavy fruiting guava trees at the Tropenhaus, between August and January we can sell around 200 kg of guavas ripened on the tree in our shop. The ripe fruits can be smelled from quite a distance – they have a slightly sour fresh scent.

Every year the kitchen uses up to 200 kg of guavas in jams and sorbets or other desserts. A particular favourite is doughnuts filled with tropical guava jam. The guavas can of course also be enjoyed fresh but the seeds are harder than the fillings in your teeth.
