Casimiroa edulis

White sapote/Mexican apple

This broad-crowned tree grows up to 18 metres tall and has long-stemmed, palmately lobed leaves with 3 to 7 green lanceolate leaflets. It forms short panicles bearing whitish-green flowers with green ovaries. These ovaries give rise to round, greenish to yellow, leathery stone fruits the size of an orange, with a thin skin and up to five white seeds.

The fruits of the white sapote are edible and have a granular, yellowish-white pulp with a mild fruity taste. This is often compared to white chocolate and banana.

This relative of the citrus family has not yet borne fruit at the Tropenhaus. We are particularly looking forward to the creamy fruits because they can be used to make a very delicious ice cream. The plant is also known colloquially as the ice cream fruit in some places.
