Arachis hypogaea

Peanut

Creeping annual with clover-like leaves. The fruit grows at a soil depth of about 8 cm. It has a light brown colour and a tough, fibrous, wrinkled pericarp. Inside the non-opening pericarp are 2 oblong-ovate seeds containing the embryo.

The protein-rich peanut is of immense value as a crop plant for oil production and as cattle feed. Worldwide, some 44 million tonnes of peanuts are produced each year, not including our modest harvest.

We show off these popular peanut plants right beside the path. Some of the seeds are used to grow new plants. These are especially popular in our shop around Christmas time!
