Curcuma longa

Orange turmeric

Herbaceous plant up to 1 metre in height with large, bright green, lanceolate leaves. Turmeric produces an upright inflorescence with single yellow flowers. The fleshy, branched, underground rhizome is more strongly coloured than the pale yellow Curcuma longa.

Often drunk as tea, turmeric is beneficial for stomach and intestinal pain and keeps us healthy through the winter. The curcumin it contains can slow down the effects of dementia and is only absorbed properly by the body with a little fat or a pinch of pepper, as curcumin is not water-soluble.

At the Tropenhaus we have planted the four different colours of turmeric side by side in the Thai garden as examples of this well-known spice.
