Boesenbergia rotunda

Chinese keys/Fingerroot

Herbaceous perennial with 3 to 4 ovate leaves and white and lilac flowers. The underground rhizome is slightly spherical, firm and yellowish with several appendages that resemble thin gnarled fingers on a hand.

Made into tea, the fingerroot can have a diuretic effect or alleviate abdominal pains and cramps. In Thailand it is traditionally used to make a popular chilli paste together with red onions, garlic, chilli, salt and lemongrass.

Here we take pleasure in its small delicate flowers, and have planted the fingerroot as an important addition to showcase our rhizome-forming ginger family.
