Persea americana

Avocado

Medium-sized evergreen tree with dense crown and elliptical leaves up to 30 cm long. Avocados are pear-shaped berries with a warty, irregular skin which varies from dark green to purplish-black. Each fruit has a spherical seed and creamy, greenish-yellow flesh.

Fertilizing the monoecious avocado by hand is difficult because the male and female flowers are fertile at different times. As they are cross-pollinated, several avocados close together are required for successful pollination to be possible.

Anyone who has ever eaten an avocado grown at the Tropenhaus is very lucky indeed. The plant very rarely bears fruit so it is very unusual for avocado pears with their high fat content to reach our kitchen.
