Cananga odorata

Ylang ylang

Fast-growing tree with grey bark and alternate, ovate-lanceolate, glossy dark green leaves narrowing to a point, with very clear venation. The inflorescence is umbellate and each flower has six curved, pendulous, yellowish-green perianth segments with numerous small stamens at the centre. The berries formed from them are blackish with multiple seeds and look similar to olives.

The flowers of this tree have a wonderful scent. Ylang ylang is therefore used in the perfume industry, for example in Coco Chanel’s famous Chanel N°5 perfume, or to produce essential ylang ylang oil.

The ylang ylang at Tropenhaus Frutigen also produces yellowish flowers. For everyone familiar with their floral, woody scent, it is astonishing how inconspicuous these fragrant flowers actually are.
