Vigna caracalla

Snail bean/Corkscrew flower

Fast-growing, perennial climbing plant with alternate, tripartite, oblong-ovate, bright green leaves. The snail-shaped flowers grow in upright, terminal bunches and can be from white to pink and purple. The green bean pods are approx. 7 cm long and contain small seeds.

The flowers of this plant flower asynchronously, so a single bunch can contain a range of colours from greenish-white through pink to purple. As it grows so quickly, it is used as livestock feed in its native Venezuela.

This climbing plant was chosen by the Tropenhaus for its beautiful flowers and delicate scent. The coiled flower is generally pollinated by large carpenter bees but can also be self-pollinating, providing us with new seed.
