Perennial, herbaceous creeping plant with succulent, glossy, dark green, pointed elliptical leaves arranged in a spiral. The fleshy stems have a reddish tinge. Tradescantia fluminensis forms white ternate flowers followed by small hairless capsules with seeds.
This species of Tradescantia is also known as “white-flowered wandering Jew” and is very vigorous as, with enough water and contact to the soil, it can grow small roots on its numerous shoots and thus cover great distances by creeping or even climbing.
The gardening team values the river spiderwort as a container plant and for ground cover. The stems and leaves are also cut and dried for tea or ground to add to herbal salt.
