Citrus x sinensis

Orange

Evergreen tree with very short thorns, densely leafy crown and leathery oval leaves. The flowers are white with a strong, pleasant scent. When ripe the oranges are orange in colour, and the pulp is arranged in segments composed of numerous juice sacs containing white seeds.

Ripe oranges only take on their orange hue at cooler temperatures. A Mediterranean climate is ideal for this popular citrus fruit. It is too warm in the Tropenhaus over the winter for the orange to change colour.

Our oranges – which mostly remain green – are harvested for tastings or we leave them hanging by the tortoises. They are an indispensable part of our collection of different citrus fruits.
