Carissa macrocapra

Natal plum

Thorny, much branched shrub with latex and oval, dark green, leathery leaves. The large white scented flowers give rise to spherical berries which are bright red when ripe and contain around 16 small brown seeds.

The name “plum” is derived from the appearance of this shrub’s berries. Although the fruits are not actually closely related to plums, they can likewise be eaten directly as fresh fruit.

Our Natal plum has already borne its pure white flowers. We are not yet able to say whether the fruits will have the sweet taste of cranberries.
