Lychee

Evergreen tree up to 10 metres in height with rough bark and even-pinnate, leathery dark green leaves. Lychees are special stone fruits growing in a lax inflorescence with red, leathery to brittle, warty skin. The juicy white pulp contains a smooth, hard, dark brown seed.

Lychees are generally familiar in wintertime as a tropical fruit with their pinkish-red skin that is difficult to remove. In the wild, however, the fruits would split open of their own accord when ripe and be eaten by birds and bats.

Our lychee tree is currently only waist high and not particularly remarkable, but in future it should give us delicious fruit at Christmas time.
