Fortunella japonia

Kumquat

Evergreen shrub with shiny dark green, elliptical leaves that grows up to 4 metres. Its sweet-smelling white flowers give rise to oval, orange-coloured citrus fruits that are 2 to 4 cm long. The pulp is divided into up to 6 segments and has an aromatic acidic smell.

Like most citrus fruits, kumquats do not go on ripening after being picked, so we leave them on the tree until they are fully ripe. What is more, they do not need to be peeled as the skin has a sweet aromatic taste. The pulp, on the other hand, is rather sour.

We harvest around 100 kg of kumquats between October and March. Our kitchen turns the fruits into chutney and jam. These fruits are particularly popular with our guests at tastings and in the shop.
