Plectranthus amboinicus

Indian borage

Herbaceous plant with slightly lignifying stem and thick fleshy leaves that are hairy on both sides. The leaves are decussate (arranged in opposite pairs) and slightly variegated on the undulating leaf margins. The light blue to magenta, two-lipped flowers are borne on an upright inflorescence.

When rubbed, the large thick leaves of Indian borage produce an intense Mediterranean scent of thyme, oregano and marjoram. This plant is also known by several other names, including Mexican mint and Cuban oregano.

We like to point out this herb during guided tours and let visitors rub and smell the beautiful leaves. When cut and dried, Indian borage can be used as a herb. It is also one of the popular plants that we grow for sale as seedlings.
