Centella asiatica

Gotu kola

Also known as Indian or Asian pennywort. Perennial, herbaceous creeping plant with long-stalked, broadly heart-shaped, luscious green leaves. The flowers grow in 4-flowered umbels and form small schizocarpic fruits.

Gotu kola is used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine as an antibiotic and to heal wounds.

Here at the Tropenhaus, gotu kola flourishes as an understorey beneath higher plants. When dried, it is an important ingredient in our herbal salt. Gotu kola can also be used as tea, or fresh in salad and pesto.
