Cola nitida

Cola nut

Tree up to 30 metres in height with a low, drooping crown, oval leathery leaves, and oblong green follicle fruit. These contain 4 to 10 magenta seeds embedded in white pulp.

The cola seeds contain up to 3% caffeine and are highly valued as a flavouring by the beverage industry. They give the popular Coca Cola drink not only its particular iconic taste but also the invigorating caffeine.

Our cola nut is still in its early infancy. It has been included at the Tropenhaus because of its important commercial status as a flavouring agent.
