Melia azedarach

Chinaberry tree/Persian lilac

Medium-sized, fast-growing tree with alternate bipinnate leaves. The leaflets are dark green and short-stalked. The tree has paniculate flower stalks with whitish magenta to lilac-coloured flowers. These give rise to round, fleshy, yellowish-beige stone fruits.

The seeds of this shade tree are used to produce essential oils and jewellery. It is also used as a decorative ornamental tree.

Our large, sturdy chinaberry likes growing up under the roof so we have to keep an eye on it and prune it regularly.
