Strelitzia reginae

Bird of paradise/Crane flower

Herbaceous evergreen plant up to 2 metres in height with branched rhizomes, forming clustered stands. The green and bluish-silvery matt basal leaves have a long stem. The sky blue flower with orange upright sepals is attached terminally to the long flower stalk and has a beak-shaped bract. The capsule is woody and consists of three valves.

The bird of paradise has a conspicuous flower and produces nectar. It is normally pollinated by nectar-feeding birds, a fact that explains its tall, strong inflorescence and the thick bract on which birds can perch.

The striking bird of paradise flower blossoms all year round and is therefore popular with visitors. The bluish shimmering, large-leaved foliage also provides attractive greenery.
