Succulent tillering plant that grows in groups. Each rosette produces around 16 lanceolate leaves with a smooth, green and white flecked surface and pale teeth along the leaf margins. Aloe vera has a viscous leaf sap and can produce a tall inflorescence with pointed yellow flowering racemes.
Aloe vera is known for the beneficial effect on human skin of its water-storing leaf tissue, which produces a yellowish, pungent mucilage. This fluid can have anti-inflammatory and immuno-stimulating effects, particularly on burns, skin irritations and minor wounds.
We planted the well-known and sun-loving Aloe vera in a warm place by the window at the Tropenhaus where it can produce small offshoots and be easily seen during tours.
