Purple rice plant

Bushy herbaceous hanging plant with dark green leaves that taper to a point and have silvery, irregular markings in the centre. The flowers are terminal with two lips and are a bright magenta colour. They produce small ribbed seeds.

The leaves of the purple rice plant can be used to obtain an extract for colouring rice and other starchy foods. It produces a lilac shade.

We use the purple rice plant to colour syrup, and the ground-covering plant with its bright flowers provides a welcome green in shady parts of the tropical garden.
