Evergreen shrub up to 3 metres high with toothed pedunculate leaves. The five-fold, bright red flowers with styles covered in yellow pollen form in the leaf axils. The capsules are ovate with five compartments.
The whole hibiscus plant can be eaten: the roots and leaves raw or stewed, and the flowers pickled or dried as tea.
