Ficus lyrata

Fiddle-leaf fig

Evergreen tree growing up to 16 metres high. It can be epiphytic but also terrestrial. The thick, dark green leaves are spirally arranged and reach a size of up to 45 cm. The tree produces small inconspicuous fruits.

This decorative plant was originally collected from a visitor in a small van. Today, an articulated truck would be required to transport our fiddle-leaf fig. The plant derives its name from the large wavy shaped leaf reminiscent of a violin.

The fiddle-leaf fig grows around and provides ideal shade for our sturgeon tank. Being one of the larger ornamental trees at the Tropenhaus, its impressive leaves are truly eye-catching.
