Evergreen twining climber with alternate, heart-shaped, light green leaves and thin pliant shoots. The Dutchman’s pipe produces flowers up to 30 cm in size whose curved perianth tube ends in a heart-shaped oval. The colour is violet-brown to light pink with white speckles and branching lines. It produces capsules with a large number of seeds.
These conspicuous flowers are very confusing to insects. The complicated exit forces the insects – attracted by the slight odour of decomposition – to spend a long time inside the flower. As a result, they can only fly away once they are covered in pollen.
Our visitors are amazed by the lush flowers of Aristolochia as this climber forms a green tunnel right over the path.
