Perennial plant, usually 30 to 60 cm high, with heart-shaped leaves which are spirally arranged on the stem and have 5 to 7 clearly visible main nerves. The flowers have four conspicuous white bracts, above which a yellowish inflorescence forms. This gives rise to tiny spherical capsules.
The chameleon plant has a slightly fishy taste when chewed or when the leaves are wet. However, the young shoots can be boiled to use as a vegetable. Crushed chameleon plant is also said to help ear inflammations.
We use the dried chameleon plant as a spice. Chameleon plant is useful for suppressing weeds, so we like to use it as a “green carpet” in our tropical garden.
