Tree up to 8 metres tall with stiff ovate leaves which are lighter on the underside than the upper side. The small white flowers give rise to orange-coloured citrus fruits with a thin skin and about 3 cm in diameter.
This citrus fruit looks very like a mandarin orange. But the fruits are so sour that it is best to leave them on the tree. In the Philippines they are also used when unripe as a juicy citrus fruit for adding to drinks or for cooking.
The ripe and fragrant calamondin oranges are harvested and frozen to be later turned into fresh ice cream.
