Evergreen tree up to 25 metres in height with leathery lanceolate leaves up to 30 cm long. The flowers are greenish-yellow with a cup-shaped, incurved calyx and a tube-shaped corolla. The resulting berries are smooth and olive green when ripe and have a soft, shiny brown pulp with up to 12 large seeds.
The creamy, dark pulp of the black sapote can be spooned out and in the Philippines its mild, sweet taste is a versatile addition to desserts. The fruit is even claimed to have a chocolaty taste, no doubt at least partly influenced by its texture and appearance.
The black sapote at the Tropenhaus is still small. However, if the fruits really do resemble chocolate pudding, it is appropriately located along the cocoa trail.
