Tropical island in the Alps

The Tropic House Frutigen represents a new tourist attraction in the Bernese Oberland. 100 litres of mountain water flows out of the Lötschberg Base Railway Tunnel every second. This heat energy is put to good use in the Tropic House: Fish and plants that love a warm climate are cultivated in the extensive facility, which is open to the public, and the Tropic House has around 40 employees from the local area. The facility is run by the Tropic House Frutigen AG, with Dr. Peter Hufschmied as the Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Tropic House as an excursion experience

The Tropic House Frutigen is an attractive excursion destination for both individuals and groups. Visitors experience at first hand how the waste heat from the Lötschberg Base Tunnel is made use of: Exotic plants thrive in the Tropic House, while heat-loving fish swim about in the large basins. The food that is produced on-site comes fresh onto the tables of the operation’s own restaurants. The Tropic House is also a suitable location for events of all kinds, such as wedding receptions, company events or meetings. A wide range of tourist attractions are also available in the immediate vicinity.

Renewable energy

Alternative methods for dealing with energy are of decisive importance for the future of mankind. Suitable ways of achieving this are displayed in the Tropic House Frutigen, and are also put into practice in an exemplary way. The greatest part of the energy required is extracted from the warm mountain water from the Lötschberg Base Tunnel. The requirement for additional energy is covered by means of additional, sustainable sources – namely sun, water and biomass. Visitors to the Tropic House can experience the various aspects of the production of energy and the utilisation of energy in a very clear manner.

Sustainable fish production

Fish make an important contribution to a balanced diet. Some global fish stocks have reduced dramatically, however, as a result of the high demand. Aquaculture is a practical alternative to traditional fishing in the open sea – the fish are bred in enclosures that lie in the water. The Tropic House Frutigen is carrying out pioneering work in this area. Siberian sturgeon are bred in its pools, and provide both a delicious meat and the coveted delicacy caviar. Through our cooperation with scientists, it is ensured that the animals are handled in the most appropriate manner for their species.
